GOVERNMENT

The Department of Health

Request

The Secretary of State for Health wanted a new version of a reference work for disabled people and their carers.

Response

After talking to disability groups, I proposed a new easier to use structure and simpler, more approachable and informative copy. Writing the 172 page "A Practical Guide for Disabled People" involved detailed research and co-ordination with eleven Government Departments, over 100 voluntary organisations and a steering committee.

Result

The Guide won universal approval and has stood the test of time, being now in its second edition.

"Thank you for your immense patience and hard work in compiling the Guide. The result speaks for itself. Congratulations on a job well done." Vince Vas, Publicity Officer

HOW TO GIVE CONSENT

The issue of consent to medical treatment is highly topical in the aftermath of Alder Hey, Bristol and Shipman. To make things clear, the Department of Health asked us to write a short guide for doctors and nurses on asking for consent, and six leaflets about giving it - for adults, children, parents, carers and children and adults with learning disabilities - then to test the copy with over 60 respondents whom we recruited and interviewed. The client was delighted by the simple outcome of this complex assignment, not least, we surmise, by the non-London rates.
